Last Tuesday, BAM and New York City Opera transformed the Lepercq Space into a playmate's paradise.
The evening celebrated the beginning of the 31st Next Wave Festival and the US premiere of
Anna Nicole, an opera inspired by the life of the infamous stripper-turned-celebrity, Anna Nicole Smith. The bawdy collaboration between composer Mark-Anthony Turnage and librettist Richard Thomas premiered at the Royal Opera House in London, where it was hailed by
The New York Times as “a musically rich, audacious, and inexplicably poignant work.”
The night began in BAM's Lepercq Space, which received a playful pink and white treatment, courtesy of decor designer
Fleurs Bella. Dressed in fabulous attire, guests tucked into dishes catered by
Great Performances and inspired by Anna Nicole's Texas roots and favorite snacks.

Dinner guests were also treated to gift bags filled with all the essentials for a pampered playmate on the town, including Rock N' Roll Lip Gloss from
Armour Beauty, Bob-a-Que Sauce from
Great Performances, cheetah print compact mirrors from
Kate Aspen, Sweet Love and Bouquet of Flowers tea from
Kusmi Tea, chocolate hearts from
NuNu Chocolates, and lip balm from
S.W. Basics.

After the show, guests were ushered down the block to
Skylight One Hanson, where they were greeted by the stylings of DJ Idlemind, a posse of Anna Nicole look-a-likes, a gravity-defying aerialist, piles of sweets and snacks and, of course, more shimmer, sparkles, and sequins.

The Great Performances catering staff kept the down home treats coming, dishing up playful twists on chicken and waffles, cheesy tater tots, and frito pie. A full candy bar featuring strawberry milkshakes, pink meringues, gummy lips, and cotton candy courtesy of
Sugar in the Raw satisfied a sweet tooth.

Guests were also invited to join in on the fun by dressing up with Anna Nicole inspired wigs, costumes, and props and posing on a miniature version of the set.
