Anna Nicole: An Opening Affair to Remember

Last Tuesday, BAM and New York City Opera transformed the Lepercq Space into a playmate's paradise.

The evening celebrated the beginning of the 31st Next Wave Festival and the US premiere of Anna Nicole, an opera inspired by the life of the infamous stripper-turned-celebrity, Anna Nicole Smith.  The bawdy collaboration between composer Mark-Anthony Turnage and librettist Richard Thomas premiered at the Royal Opera House in London, where it was hailed by The New York Times as “a musically rich, audacious, and inexplicably poignant work.”

The night began in BAM's Lepercq Space, which received a playful pink and white treatment, courtesy of decor designer Fleurs Bella. Dressed in fabulous attire, guests tucked into dishes catered by Great Performances and inspired by Anna Nicole's Texas roots and favorite snacks.

Dinner guests were also treated to gift bags filled with all the essentials for a pampered playmate on the town, including Rock N' Roll Lip Gloss from Armour Beauty, Bob-a-Que Sauce from Great Performances, cheetah print compact mirrors from Kate Aspen, Sweet Love and Bouquet of Flowers tea from Kusmi Tea, chocolate hearts from NuNu Chocolates, and lip balm from S.W. Basics.

All wrapped up in a perfectly pink package!
After the show, guests were ushered down the block to Skylight One Hanson, where they were greeted by the stylings of DJ Idlemind, a posse of Anna Nicole look-a-likes, a gravity-defying aerialist, piles of sweets and snacks and, of course, more shimmer, sparkles, and sequins.

The Great Performances catering staff kept the down home treats coming, dishing up playful twists on chicken and waffles, cheesy tater tots, and frito pie. A full candy bar featuring strawberry milkshakes, pink meringues, gummy lips, and cotton candy courtesy of Sugar in the Raw satisfied a sweet tooth.

A feast fit for a tabloid queen!
Guests were also invited to join in on the fun by dressing up with Anna Nicole inspired wigs, costumes, and props and posing on a miniature version of the set.
