Guest post: Amkoullel on "S.O.S."

Malian rapper Amkoullel came to BAM in early March as part of Mic Check: Hip-Hop From North Africa and the Middle East, where he performed a beautiful pared-down version of his track "S.O.S." Watch the performance below, and read on for his motivations for writing the song (in English and French).

The Malian people are currently facing great problems because they have been abandoned by their politicians.

Sadly, the majority of politicians in Mali don’t have a fiber of patriotism. Maybe I’m wrong in saying that, but it’s an opinion shared by the majority of the Malian people. This belief is enough to create terrible consequences that affect the behavior of the community.

We, the Malian people, feel left to our own devices—without justice, without protection, without education, without being recognized for years of hard labor and sacrifice for the country—living without the strong rule of the law. This general disillusion destroys hopes, dreams, and the desire for a collective ideal. Filling one's pockets, no matter how, becomes the only necessity.

This is essential so that the people aren’t at the mercy of the jungle, and so that they can protect themselves and their family. Everyone is afraid of the same thing: to be poor in a poor country where the people have been abandoned by the government and politicians; to be poor in a country where judicial power doesn’t exist and financial crimes and embezzlement are hardly ever condemned because they are never even judged. This general anxiety creates an unwritten law: the goat grazes where it is tied up. In other words, everyone uses what they can, regardless of the consequences for the country. Who will take care of a nation that has never been there for us, its people?

We need justice and education in Mali in order to change things.

Anyone who has suggestions toward these goals is welcome in Mali. As an artist, I can only speak about it, sing about it, and create around it. That’s why my song "S.O.S." is a message to Malians and also the rest of the world. All the proceeds of the sale of the "S.O.S." single are donated to the Malian Red Cross in order to help the people in Northern Mali.

Thank you all!
Amkoullel
